Hi! I’m traveling to Malaysia myself so I bought the “Insight Guide Malaysia”, it has a lot of info but I have had much time to look at it yet. On page 253 there’s a section called “Jewels in the sea” They name a bigger island with more facilities called Pulau Redang and a smaller and quieter one named Pulau Lang Tengah. They suggest booking your package in advance from the east coast or KL. You can go snorkelling and diving in the corals, even at night. There’s a traditional fishing village and a Marine Park and a giant turtle hatching center.
    Here are some websites:
    for general info:
    and more specific:

I hope it helps and that we can exchange some info. I’ll be traveling in January. Good luck!

I think it’s now named Pulau Sibu, about 2 hrs north of Johor Bahru on the Mersing Rd.

    Try the site below:-

Actually u r not getting the right answers from both Dina and Farah[sorry girls], youself also got the wrong info, Lang Tengah now named as Pulau Sibu Tengah lying just beside Pulau Sibu, P.S.T is much much smaller hence facility also lesser as compared with P.S. The Vietnamese Refugee transit camp was on Pulau Bidong near Merang[closer to Pulau Redang], Terengganu. For Pulau Lang Tengah, you need to get off from Kuala Besut, Terengganu, its on the way to Pulau Redang. You may visit or, Sorry i would like to help but not sure which island you mean, if its Lang Tengah then good choice as its one of the diving heaven !

Pulau Tengah is just about half hour boat ride from Mersing..
    it’s between Mersing and Tioman…

I’ve been there before (snorkeling, diving, fishing, etc).
The water is not as crystal as Tioman or Lang Tengah (much further away)…underwater visibility is about 30-40 feets only.

Quite easy to get there….1st go to Mersing…and but a ferry ticket. There’s quite a few ferry/speed boats awaiting.
Accomodations…there are chalets and dorms. It’s advisable to book early….
U could call +60 7 799 5212 (Mersing Tourist Centre) for more info.

    hi,
pulau babi tengah or pulau tengah used to be a refugee camp for vietnamese immigrants after the occupation of Saigon by the north Vietnamese from the late 70′s to the early 80′s when it was abruptly closed down by malaysian authorities.
It is part of 3 islands babi besar and babi kechil . These 3 islands are the closest to Mersing . Pulau tengah was badly damaged ecologically during the ‘refugee island ‘ period. However the island has now since regained is beauty and there are even the odd sightings of the large turtles in the part of the island known as south island.
    Enjoy!
